There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.
– Napoleon Hill
Successful people make plans. Big plans. Those who consistently achieve what they want might not know precisely every step it will take to get them to their goal, but they never fail to move forward in that direction. The affluent know what success means for them and set their life boundaries and business strategies accordingly. They are inspiring to be around. They exude passion. And they waste little time with anything or anyone that might seek to conquer them. They have a grand design for their life.
Lately I have met a great many people who truly want to have big plans. They earnestly want to move forward. But they are lost . . . and don’t know what their definite major purpose is. No one’s ever shown them a blueprint for massive success. Most don’t even know what’s possible in their own lives. When I ask them, “What does success mean for you?” I get a blank stare back as if I have just hit the CONTROL-ALT-DELETE keys for their soul or I am told overly broad answers like “success is being happy.” To dig any deeper with them necessarily results in an emptiness of goals that can be read on their face and seen in their body language a mile away. You see, many people are drifting and floating and reacting through life until something just appears to them or it falls in their lap. They live a life of confusion, at worst, and being absent from their own success, at best. Does this sound like someone you know? It’s not you, right? Well, how many of you reading this know precisely what you want to achieve and a time frame for completing it in?
Here are some examples of highly successful people who have taken the time to set and write out specific goals. Notice that I said “write out.” There’s something magical in putting words in black and white.
BRUCE LEE
I, Bruce Lee, will be the first highest paid Oriental super star in the United States. In return I will give the most exciting performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor. Starting 1970 I will achieve world fame and from then onward till the end of 1980 I will have in my possession $10,000,000. I will live the way I please and achieve inner harmony and happiness.
JIM CARREY
I wrote myself a check for ten million dollars for acting services rendered and dated it Thanksgiving 1995. I put it in my wallet and it deteriorated. And then, just before Thanksgiving 1995, I found out I was going to make ten million dollars for Dumb & Dumber. I put that check in the casket with my father because it was our dream together.
Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, set forth specific instructions for identifying a person’s definiteness of purpose. In fact, the Napoleon Hill Foundation offers the following resource:

So, with homage to Napoleon Hill and those who have come before, here’s the suggested formula for you to write out and fill in for your specific desires and goals:
YOUR DEFINITE MAJOR PURPOSE FORMULA
O Divine Providence, I ask not for mere riches but more wisdom with which to make wiser use of the riches you gave me at birth, consisting in the power to control and direct my own mind to whatever ends I might desire.
I declare that I am the future of _________________________________________________ [FILL IN WITH THE BENEFIT YOU ARE BRINGING TO THE WORLD]. By _____________________ [FILL IN DATE TO ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOAL], I will have ___________________________________________ [FILL IN THE PRECISE PHYSICAL GOAL YOU WANT TO OBTAIN] which will bring me ______________________________________________ [FILL IN THE MONETARY BY-PRODUCT OF YOUR ACHIEVING YOUR GOAL] which will come to me in various amounts from time to time during the year. In achieving this goal, I act with supreme confidence, massive integrity, and unequaled charisma. And _____________________________________________ [INSERT ANY LIFE OR BUSINESS PARTNER YOU HAVE WORKING WITH YOU] and I act in perfect harmony with each other as this goal materializes.
I believe that I will have this goal and this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that I can now see the goal achieved and this money before my eyes and can touch it with my hands. My conviction is so indestructible, I can feel the fulfillment of such success and am grateful for all that it allows me to provide and achieve. It is now awaiting transfer to me in the proportion that I deliver the service I intend to render in return for it. I am awaiting a plan by which to accumulate this dream and this money, and I will follow that plan, when it is received.
In return for this success, I give the most passionate service of which I am capable, render the fullest possible quantity of my time, and the best possible quality of my attention and energy in the capacity of providing people with _______________________________________________ [FILL IN WHAT BENEFIT YOU ARE BRINGING TO OTHERS].
There is much more to the power and use of this formula, of course. Just sitting down and working through this recipe for success is quite a breakthrough, however. Once you have your personalized Definite Major Purpose Formula complete, remember to repeat it to yourself several times throughout the day. I recommend at least twice a day – once when you wake up and then again right before you fall asleep. For those who know about self-hypnosis or have access to a hypnotherapist, you can make your formula even more powerful by using a hypnotherapy script to deepen its impact on your subconscious.
