Thinking Magically™ | The Power of Make-Believe (Pt 1)

I want to provide you with one of the most powerful tools you can learn to wield. We are going to explore the ability to create specific results through the verbal or mental recitation of words. Now let me start off with a a word of warning: saying a bunch of words, alone, is not going to get you any type of consistent, sustainable, desirable results. You have to actually combine those words with INTENT and then DO SOMETHING in furtherance of your dreams as well – not just talk about them, hope for them, or wish they might come true. Unless you are actively participating in your own success (that presumes you are taking action), you are ultimately doomed to failure. On the other hand, taking action can be made even more potent and forceful when you add in some of your intense focus and visualization.

So let’s start with a little basic understanding of the power words have to shape our imaginations and thus our lives . . .

We all have desired outcomes of one sort or another; outcomes that will bring excellence to our lives. In order to get that excellence, you must understand that the excellence in your life springs from the excellence of the decisions you make. And the excellence of the decisions you make ultimately springs from the excellence in the way you speak to yourself (and others). It is no wonder, then, that affirmations, mantras, incantations, invocations, prayer, and even magic spells have played a central part in humankind’s development. And all of them center around a habit or ritual of saying specifically structured words in order to help deliver a specifically desired outcome.

Emile Coué, in 1920, published his first book, Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion. In it he described a way for people to consciously direct their thoughts through self-suggestion and turn those highly focused thoughts into reality; a technique that he described as:

An instrument that we possess at birth, and with which we play unconsciously all our life, as a baby plays with its rattle. It is however a dangerous instrument; it can wound or even kill you if you handle it imprudently and unconsciously. It can on the contrary save your life when you know how to employ it consciously.

I’m sure you’ve heard Coué’s now-famous affirmation: Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better. He suggested repeating that phrase in a very specific routine – every morning when you get up and then right before you go to bed up to 20 times in a row each time and then, again, throughout the day. This autosuggestion method served to capture a person’s attention – a type of self-hypnosis – and transform their emotional state (if not their physical well-being, too). The Coué Method has been adopted and adapted by many people and much of the self-help industry tools today have their roots in that methodology.

So how can you put the power of affirmations to work for you?

STEP ONE. Make a choice on what you want to achieve. I’ve written before about my M.O.R.E. Concept; namely, everyone wants a version of the same four things – Money (wealth, material items, things, affluence, possessions), Opportunities (a chance, possibilities, choices, options, a fresh start), Relationships (love, romance, intimacy, friends), and Energy (health, wellness, well-being, vigor). There is currently a gap in your life that needs to be filled in. Which of these four elements needs your focus the most at the moment?

STEP TWO. Make a picture in your mind’s eye of what achieving your goal will look like. Now use the power of make-believe to play out your desired goal as if it is happening RIGHT NOW. Immerse yourself in the scene – don’t just watch it from afar. Notice how having what you want feels. Notice how it smells. Notice how it looks. Bring all of your emotion and senses into play.

STEP THREE. Make a written statement of what you want to achieve. Write out in detail what you want to achieve. And write it out in the present tense. Be as specific and detailed as you can possibly be. And let your imagination run wild. Really write out what you want without censoring yourself.

STEP FOUR. Make your affirmation a habit. Read your written affirmation out loud (even if it’s whispered) every morning upon awakening and every night before going to sleep. And read it out loud at least once more during the day. As you say the same words over and over, put all the power of your emotion and intent into them.
